CHABAD OF WESTERN MONMOUTH COUNTY TO WELCOME CHILDREN FROM SDEROT, ISRAEL
Manalapan, NJ (June 19, 2008) During the summer months local children enjoy riding their bikes, swimming and playing outdoors. But for the children of Sderot, Israel, that is no longer possible. Since 2002, the children of Sderot and the Gaza perimeter communities have been living under a constant barrage of rocket and mortar fire and from the Palestinian-controlled Gaza strip and the children must be within seconds reach of a bomb shelter at all times. Sderot is less than a mile from Gaza.
But this summer, 10 children from Sderot will be welcomed to our local area by Chabad of Western Monmouth County, and will enjoy a fun-filled, carefree month at Chabad%u2019s Camp Gan Israel in Englishtown.
%u201CWe want to give the kids a worry-free summer in a loving community,%u201D said Rabbi Boruch Chazanow, director of Chabad of Western Monmouth County. %u201CWe also want to show the people of Sderot that the American Jewish community cares about them.%u201D
The children are part of a group of 110 youngsters who will be brought from Sderot to participate in Chabad camps in Montreal, Canada; and the east and west coasts of the United States. The program, which began in Boston last year with 20 children, was a huge success, Chazanow said.
School in Sderot ends on June 30 and the children will arrive in Manalapan a few days later and jump right into the camp program, which will have been in session for a week. In addition to the regular camp program, nightly and weekend activities and trips are being planned for the group of 13-year-old girls. A highlight will be a community welcome for the young guests.
%u201CWe hope to raise awareness of the plight of the families living in Sderot,%u201D Chazanow said. %u201CThis is not just newsprint. We will be seeing the real faces of kids who are affected by what%u2019s happening there.%u201D
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since August 2005, an average of 80 Kassam rockets a month have been fired on the region.
A typical day for a youngster in Sderot begins at 6:30 a.m. when Hamas launches the first rocket of the day and the red alert goes off, warning residents that they have 15 seconds to escape from an exploding rocket. As a result, parks are empty and even going to and from school is treacherous.
The violence has economically crippled the city, and families who want to move away are unable to do so because they cannot sell their homes.
According to research by the Tel Hai College Resource Center, one out of every three Sderot children suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and all of these children have a least one parent who suffers from PTSD. Anxiety symptoms in children include sleeping difficulties, nightmares, developmental regressions, bed-wetting and fear of the outside.
The children who will be arriving in western Monmouth County will have undergone a screening process to determine their capability to adjust to being away from home. For the first time in years, these kids will be able to play in the sunshine, swim and get the physical exercise that they have been denied.
Each camp is raising money to support the children in their communities. Local residents are asked to sponsor a child or provide funding for trips and activities.
This is not the first time that our community has rallied in support of the people of Israel. During two visits in 2004 and 2005, Rabbi Chazanow and his family distributed $50,000 that was donated by local residents directly to victims of terror in Israel.
Anyone who is interested in assisting with the program should call the Chabad office at (
